Another Verbal From Detroit Lakes

As we tweeted earlier, Detroit Lakes linebacker Brian Labat has committed to UND.  Our Detroit Lakes sources told us as much and it was later confirmed via Twitter by Dom Izzo at WDAY.

Labat is a very athletic playmaker for the Lakers and probably projects as an OLB in the 3-4 with UND.  The 6-2, 210 pound Labat has played a plethora of different positions for the Lakers and continues an everlong lineage of very successful Detroit Lakes preps who have continued on to UND for college football.

We believe Labat has the athleticism and ability to be a difference maker on the edge from the first time he steps on the field.

Labat accepted the UND scholarhsip offer over some interest from NDSU and is the 4th known verbal in the 2012 recruiting class for UND.

Have you heard anything about players from South St. Paul committing for next year? I heard that from someone recently that has a slight connection and was wondering if it was true.

      1. I would put a few bucks on it. He has to graduate from Butte Community College next year to be eligible to play at an FCS school. I would say there is a decent chance he will end up at UND.

By my count the latest commit from Detroit Lakes makes 4. They must have a ton of talent. It’s not often that you see one high school send 4 kids to D1 programs.

KARE 11 Assessment – “Sura’s opponents rave about his toughness. Sura was a workhorse carrying the football 291-times for 1985 yards and 20 touchdowns. The Packer runningback averaged 7-yards per carry, 181 per game with just one fumble all season. He was impressive, and Sam Sura will be back next year.” Coach Sexauer assessment in Pioneer Press “Sam’s a strong, tough-nosed running back that sets up his blocks and hits the hole with force. He has games speed and won’t be pulled down from behind.

Brian LaBatt was named to the Academic All-State FB team. If the rest of this recruiting class has this type of potential, the Sioux FB team is going to have a great recruiting year.

South St Paul has had some guys play for North Dakota in the past back in the early 80’s. Who knows maybe check out some guys on the defensive and offensive line for the Packers
